Chop into big bowl: 2 slices of properly preserved neighbor's banana bread (tinfoil & fridge), then sprinkle with Chiquita's properly preserved bananas (secret recipe, pick green, kill spiders), Scoop on couple scoops properly preserved vanilla ice cream (the freezer?), sprinkle with properly preserved butterscotch syrup (again, secret recipe chemicals and plastic bottle. Also fridge time). Let get a little soggy. Feed to spouse, bask in glory. Love, Edrena

I remember first time I made my own, wrapped in muslin soaked in brandy. The recipe made a huge amount and I made the leetle loaves. I had fruitcake all year!  Nowadays, I think it would be better with my own candied ginger and fruit. That stuff in the store is revolting. Edrena

MY MIL used to make a really good one with currents, cherries, pineapple, etc. Heavy as a brick but really moist. Of course, as a good Baptist lady, it had no booze in it. She would send us a couple of the cakes in a tin to our home in Texas. I would then soak them in El Presidente brandy, a good Mexican brand, wrap them in soft cotton muslin, seal the tin, and let them sit for a couple of months. Ooo, la la, very good. Nothing worse than a man sitting on the porch drunk with fruitcake crumbs on the front of his shirt. <VBG Middle SIL now uses the recipe and she does put booze in them. Mom was Baptist and raised five Catholic kids.

We never eat fruitcake because it has rum And one little bite turns a man to a bum. Oh can you imagine a sorrier sight Than a man eating fruitcake until he gets tight? We never eat cookies because they have yeast And one little bite turns a man to a beast. Oh can you imagine a bigger disgrace Than a man in the gutter with crumbs on his face? Chorus Away, away with rum, by gum, rum by gum, rum by gum Away, away with rum by gum Is the song of the Temperance Union. gloria p
