I am needing help on combining running with weight training. I am quite thin and am trying to bulk up in addition to run. Running is my first choice, but I know bulking up will help with overall strength. I am open to suggestions on how to best combine the two. If possible, respond to me, as I do not always have a lot of time to read the postings. Thanks for your suggestions. Mark

I combined weights and running during high school for track and cross country but, I never gained any real muscle mass.  I played Ultimate (extreemly aerobic sport) during college and worked out with weights 3 times a week still with no results. Now I am 31 and have managed to put on 10 pounds of muscle.  How?  Well, many factors contributed to this weight gain. First, my _meta_bolism has started to hit the curve and I'm not burning quite so many calories as I did back in HS and college. I cut back on the number of times that I ran during the week from 5 to 2. I went to the gym 3 times a week and focused on the major muscle groups (quads, lats, traps, pecs, etc.)  I started slowly but, built up my strength and flexibility.  I stuck to working the legs HARD.  3 sets of 5-8 reps of heavy weight (as heavy as you can lift w/o injury) at 40 minutes to an hour tops (you don't want to burn too many calories so keep it short). Eating.  Do a lot of this.  I recommend mixing protein powder with milk and ice cream (chocolate's my favorite) and drinking this shake at least once per day!  Keep eating regular meals and add this shake, don't substitute the shake for a meal. Rest.  Resting is not only important for any athelete but, necessary for muscles to recover properly and rebuild themselves.  Set your workout time for say 5:30 - 6:30.  Then, have a protein shake and rest from 6:30 - 7:30.  I read the paper and if I need a short nap, I take one.  Don't skip this part of the workout - this is analogous to breathing out but, not in... You must do both. I followed these guidelines myself and gained 10 pounds in under 6 months. Best of luck to you. Chris Ripps

I say foret the protein shake; the powders are expensive and most Americans get plenty of protein in their diets (1-2 g protein per kg body).  Replenish the carb supply within 2 hours of the exercise session. Users of food supplements have some of the most expensive urine in the world (i.e. the body excretes most surplus nutrients).
