fat burning supplements  
Could anyone reccomend any fat-burning supplements, or does anyone have experience with one that works.  There seem to be so many now that are available.  I tried one but it did not have much, if any effect apart from some initial water-weight loss. I need to lose 40 pounds and am already on a low-fat diet, and exercise 30 minutes/day on a Nordic-Trak...I have been doing this for quite a while (6 months) and have not had any success.... Thanks for any help....

Thanks for any help.... There are lots of things you can do to break the barrier you seem to be up against. Exercise: The Nordik-Trak is probably the best you can use as far as equipment, cuz you're using your entire body. Try varying the way you exercise.  For the last four or five years, studies in magazines, newsletters, ABC NEWS health segments, etc. have been touting the benefits of long-duration, low intensity exercises, so make sure your heart rate is between 65% and 75 or 80% of your max heart rate but don't do this EVERY workout. Have a tough workout once in a while. On your low intensity workouts, make it LONGER than 30 minutes, though. Some very recent studies done at Universities, and I think actually reported in the New England Journal discovered that when you do your typical low-intensity, long duration workouts, during the workout it's good to insert maybe three, four or more two minute sprints where you hike up the intensity quite a bit. This is also recommended by Covert Bailey. When you do an exercise at high intensity levels for the whole workout, not as much fat is burned, but the _meta_bolism-revving effect lasts longer than after doing an exercise low-intensity workout. SOO, if you work in the sprints in your low intensity workout, you're burning a good amount of fat, AND benefiting from the after-burner effect from the two-minute high intensity sprints.  The sprints can be one, 1.5, or two minutes longer. VARIATION is the key,  as I mention with diet below. Also vary how much time in BETWEEN each sprint. And do some different things once in a while than your NordicTrak. Diet: Eat five small meals, DON'T eat so much during any of the meals!. If your body can't handle more food than you take in at a time, it's that much which will go to fat stores. So five small meals. Once in a while, maybe every 9 or 10 days, step up your calorie amount to remind your body that you're not in a famine situation. It's better, yet, to stagger your calorie amount day to day to keep your body's _meta_bolism high. If you eat the same number of cals every day, your body will be that much faster in adjusting to it and lowering _meta_bolism. I know: noone likes to keep track of calories, but it becomes automatic after doing it for a while. Sometimes you have to get scientific and exact to get results. Better yet, don't really worry about calories at all, but eat low or non- fat foods, and don't be in a hurry to lose weight. If you're cutting down fat and making a effort to eat overall less calories, your goal will arrive. Try chromium picolinate. This works to keep insulin balance and avoids unnecessary fat storage.  Don't think you can diet during the week and go all out on the weekend. This doesn't work.   Mental: Visualize your body as you want it. See yourself, feel yourself with the abs, chest, arms, etc. that you want. Do this 10-15 minutes a day. The more pratice you get doing this, the better you'll get at really reaching a vivid picture of the perfect bodybuilder's body with YOUR head on this body! You may not be looking for a bodybuilder's body, but just visualize the body YOU want. I'm no expert, I just read a lot, and know what has worked for me in the past. Steve Bailey

Chloline and L-arginine are supposed to help mobilize fatty acids during aerobic exercise. But if you're not losing now, I don't think they would make too much of a difference. Try this: lengthen your workout to 45 minutes, or better yet, an hour; fat stores usually aren't tapped for energy until after 20 minutes of aerobic exercise.

I'm in the midst of a similar situation except for one thing. In five months I've lost 25 of the 45 I hope to lose. The answer. Run!! Make the anchor exercise of your aerobic program running. Nothing works better, period. Use the Nordic track for variety and when you need to rest from running. Go hang out in rec.running, start slow, get addicted, and that weight will come off. Now I'm just into running, I don't really think about losing weight. The 45 lbs mentioned above is just what I estimate the result will be when I get lean. Some folks really resist running, but it can be fun. IMHO, fat burning supplements are snake oil. Good luck in whatever you choose!

Thanks for any help.... Dear Steve, I recommend you skip the fat burning supplements until you get your diet and training pointed in the right direction. As to diet, I see you have low fat but you don't mention the % of protein, carb and fat. I recommend for you to lose fat 50% Protein, 40% Carb, and 10% Fat.This diet is higher in protein but this will work very well with the training. As to training, I suspect your intensity on the nordic-trak is low and you are training aerobically. While this will burn fat during the exercise it has a poor fat burning effect in recovery. High intensity training is a better option for you. You should train at maximum speed (85-100%) of your all out effort for short periods. I don't know your age, but your pulse should get up to the 185 beats per minute range. When you reach a a point in your all out work where you begin to slow to 90% of your top speed, stop the exercise. Rest until your pulse drops to 105-110 bpm.Then begin your next effort. Repeat for several cycles or until you can't exercise at even the 90% rate any more. You should begin with about 15 minutes of all out training, performing it as often as you can. You don't need to use just the nordic-trak as other equipment is even better like a recumbent bike all out or even weight training as fast as you can lift, etc.The high intensity training has been shown to burn up to 6 times] as much fat (fatty acids) in recovery than aerobic (slow) trainingplus you get the added benefit of building muscle via high intensity work you nnever will with aerobic training.S Ummary: High protein diet, high in intensity training for multiple workouts (short 10-15min) daily will burn a lot more fat and you will see a good result. As for supplements, most are stimulants, diuretics, or laxatives and they are only a quick-fix. New research points to a plant extract called garcinia alpha hydroxycitric acid which seems to block the conversion of carbs & fat into fatty acids within fat cells. This plus chromium and L-carnitine may prove useful, but before you run ourt and buy the magic pill, get your diet and training ducks in a row first. Good Luck. ==Thomas J.
