Boxercise usually takes the form of a one hour class mainly performed at a sports centre, but it can be modified and used quite effectively at home without the need for a lot of space and equipment. How could it be done at home? Derrick

Boxercise also trains the cardiovascular, aerobic and anaerobic systems which provide an all round training session. Aerobic? Yes. Anaerobic? No. I guess it depends on what you're doing during the Circuit portion of the workout (weight training, for example). But you're right, I can't think of many traditional methods of training that'd be anaerobic. Derrick

How could it be done at home? Kathy Smith's 'Aerobox' video is really quite good, and will be more than a handful if you are in less-than-ideal condition. The workout in the tape is actually designed (and led) by Michael Olajide. I would also do a regular toning workout with freeweights/calithenics and PLENTY of stretching to get your infrastructure nice and strong. Then you'll be a lot better prepared to move on to more difficult activities. -P

I don't know how old you are Derrick, but I've noticed, for myself, my heavy bag hurts me much more than I do it. Even jumping rope is a high impact aerobic exercise which I no longer do. It also has the repetitive shoulder motion which can cause injuries after awhile. IMO, the speed bag and shadow boxing (without full extension of your punches) is for ME the best. If you lift weights and build muscle, the extra muscle will burn off additional calories. I think I read that 10 pounds of muscle allows you to eat an extra 200 calories per day. Or something like that. Yes, it raises the body's need for calories at rest. Basal _meta_bolic rate (I think) they call it? I might do some weight training, but I've had a lot of problems in the past. I've got old injuries that get aggravated. I'm careful to lift with good form now that I'm older

I built my own speed bag platform, and it's as good as those you'd buy, and for much less. ... It's built like a brick shit house, and does not vibrate like the cheapies do. I'm not much of a handyman, but a de_script_ion would still be much appreciated. The way I understand Sanity, he put together the platform/foundation for the heavybag, but the heavybag itself was a commercial product he hung from that self-constructed thing. These days, there's great quality, low impact heavybags out there that I can recommend - one of those being the water-filled The Wave that I have at home. Even though I seldom really-really load up when hitting it, I must say it's way civilized and it's never hurt my hands. But in my case, it's always been the wrist I've had to worry about. No, I built the speed bag platform. I hung it, and all I added to it was the swivel and speed bags. Now regarding that Wave bag, I wish I had one of those. I rarely (literally) have used it as it hurts me more than I do damage to it. I've hit that Wave bag over a friends house, and it's as though you dug a punch deep into Butterbean's belly.
