     I once took a class on wine, and the instructor routinely praised Kermit Lynch and Paul Marcus in Berkeley.  I should note that he also always went first to Liquor Barn (out of business, now, aren't they?) since they former two can be more expensive. Paul Marcus is in Oakland, in the Rockridge Market Hall.

I'm looking for a good wine shop in the City or the East Bay that has a good selection and decent prices. Friendly help is a definite plus as always Any recommendations are much appreciated. My favorite decently priced wine shop in the area is the Wine Club. They are at 953 Harrison in SF, a little southwest of the 5th Street exit coming from the Bay Bridge. They always make great recommendations, and have very good pricing. I'll second the Wine Club recommendation and add K&L Liquors also on Harrison two blocks from the Wine Club between 3rd and 4th these are my two favorites.   A while back I received a questionaire from Wine & Spirits Magazine asking me to rate  my favorite Wine shops in San Francisco.  They listed a number of good stores but included neither Wine Club  nor K&L, and had two blanks for write in votes.  When the issue with  the reader's poll top stores came they must have received a lot of write ins because  Wine Club was number one and K&L was number two.  Both have good prices, good selection, and knowledgable  and friendly employees.  Wine Club also has a tasting bar. K&L on Harrison between 3rd & 4th streets is a good place to go.  It's two blocks away from Wine Club on Harrison near 6th.
