My husband is on the Dean Ornish diet for 11 months with triglcerides over 400. He is FAILTHFUL to the diet. He was on Zocor until the last few weeks and his doctor just changed his medication to Lopid and Pravachol in combination. His weight came down 20-25 pounds during the first few months of the diet, but has remained stable (he is about 20 pounds overwieght at this time). Cholesterol has been down and is now at 180. Does anyone have any experience with getting triglycerides down? Is there anything else he can do besides the Ornish diet that might help? It would also be helpful to hear from other people who have been using the Ornish diet. Thanks!!! Meryl I am two yrs. post bypass surgery (x5) and stay on a very strict diet very similar to the Ornish diet. I walk 4 miles every day of my life. In an effort to get a low hdl (26) up I started to drink 16 oz of red wine each day and found the hdl went up 4 points but my trigs also encreased to 240. I cut out the alcohol and the trigs dropped to 103 and the hdl fell back to 26. I increased the red wine to 4 oz per day and the hdl rose by two points and the trigs rose to 115. I have increased the red wine to 6 oz per day hoping to get the hdl up lil bit more and yet keep the trigs below 150 ( my docs target). Will be getting the blood checked next week. Other than niacin being prescribed I have not read of anything else that would affect trigs. but niacin has bad reaction on most folks. I guess my message would be that alcohol has definite effect on trigs. Good luck Frank Largo, Fl.

I believe I read somewhere (perhaps in Ornish's book) that the thinking is that high triglycerides and low HDL don't matter *if* your cholesterol is sufficiently low. I'm not sure how 180 scores

I had an MI a year ago, and have been following the Ornish diet (as well as having various medications) since then. My greatest risk factor was high cholesterol/bad fractions. I was diagnosed with combined familial hyperlipidemia - which simply means all my lipid numbers were bad, despite a good diet, and that the condition runs in my family. The statin drugs (zocor, pravachol, et.al.) are essentially similar in their action and effect, so there would be little difference among them. You may want to ask your doctor about LIPIDIL (micronized fenofibrate - different drug than Lopid) which was effective in my case in controlling the triglyceride level. Also, if you are not already doing so, remove alcohol completely from your diet until the numbers are well under control - alcohol is the number 1 (dietary) cause of high triglycerides. If you would like to contact me by email for more details on my case, or to share experiences, please feel free. Hope this helps!
