raw food diet menu (sigh) more questions on BARF
Well, I picked up Pat McKay's Reigning Cats and Dogs yesterday, and devoured the whole thing inlike half an hour (not hard, since the font is like size 16).  It shed a lot of light on a lot of questions that I had.  I also spent about an hour at my local specialty dog store talking with the owner, who feeds his two dogs a raw food diet, and although he sells Innova, California Natural, and a few other kibbles in his store, strongly advocates raw and has a huge fridge full of packaged raw meat (with the veggies already ground in, etc).         However, I still have some questions that maybe those of you in the group feeding raw could answer (some or all).  I'll put them in list format so that you can insert text easily when replying.  If you want to just email me, that's fine - I don't want to clutter up the ng too much! Here goes: 1.  How often do you feed bones, as opposed to just the meat?  Pat McKay didn't mention frequency, but seemed to focus on ground or chunked meat as the primary source of muscle meat in her book.  Are you feeding ground turky, chiicken, and beef, and occasionally a chicken wing or turkey neck or beef bone, etc., or are you feeding some sort of bone w/ every meal? 2.  Along with that, if you're not giving bones at every meal, are you giving a bone meal supplement?  What/who is the best source for bone meal supplement (I saw some in t/ store yesterday).  Does it go bad? How much do you give at each meal? 3.  What is a typical day's/week's menu for your dog?  What kind of rotations are your dogs on?  How often, if at all, do you fast them? Along with this, what size/kind of dog are you feeding?  I'm trying to get amounts for a 50 (but should be ~48) lb. border collie who is moderately to fairly active. How many times a day are you feeding these amounts? 4.  Do you prepare your food ahead of time and refridgerate or freeze it? Say, in baggies for each day. 5.  What other kinds of supplements are you giving besides bone meal, if any?  I don't mean wierd wacky supplements that the dog is already getting on the raw diet, but things that the raw diet isn't going to give him. 6.  Um....that's it for now, although I'm sure that each of the above questions, when answered, will spawn five more questions.  If you have a web page that can answer any or allof these questions, lemme know. Thanks!  BTW, when talking to the store owner, and when reading that book, both said that pork was highly indigestible, which is what I was trying to *start* Gonzo on. Jesus, I'm an ass sometimes.  No wonder the poor guy had the runs. Good Boy!
