Some comments, some questions, some AMOTQs.... 1. Remember a few months (or maybe more) ago, when I was puzzled about seeing a motorcycle with a handicapped tag? Well, I finally found out what the story is, at least on that one: the rider has an artificial knee; he can ride, but not walk long distances. (I wonder what he does on the many occasions when the elevator in the building is out of service?) 2. I found a local store that sells sugar-free chocolate! I'm a happy camper. 3. Along the lines of giving things up, I have been caffeine-free for two weeks now. I know, chocolate has a caffeine analog (theobromine, isn't it?); the last chocolate I had was more than two weeks ago. 4. When I took geometry and trig in high school, I *hated* having to write proofs; it was the single worst part of the class. But a couple of years ago, I took a course that was an entire summer of writing proofs about number theory (very *basic* number theory) and I loved it. This semester, I'm taking another class that's heavy into proofs, and it's still fun. Why is that? 5. Despite that class is fun and I like math, the semester is only three days old and I'm already having anxiety nightmares. I really ought to call my insurance company and get pre-approved for a series of visits with my pshrink, before it gets worse. 6. Dale bought a DVD p_layer_ last night. He also bought a copy of Michael Flatley's _Lord of the Dance_ on DVD. Oh My Fleeping Wow. All of a sudden, one of the things that ticked me off the most about the video, namely, What brilliant stage designer decided to fucking *backlight* the dancers?! became no longer a problem; on the DVD, you can see the dancers. 7. Now that the students are back, so are the street preachers. The one today took his text from Leviticus, and was condemning homosexuals. I managed to refrain from asking him what his clothes were made of, but maybe I should try that next time. 8. It aggravates me that students buying textbooks are such a captive population. My book for this one class is less than a half-inch thick (including the covers, TYVM!), and cost me $90. Okay, I know, size isn't everything, but I bet I could pick up a much larger Dover book on the same topic at Barnes & Noble for about half that. 9. Does anyone else find that eating beans regularly reduces the amount of, ah, byproducts from same? 10. I think sub_title_d Anime is a lot more fun than dubbed Anime. 11. The Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter books by Laurell K. Hamilton are way cool. And moderately kinky. 12. I'm considering starting YA [Worms] Copyright thread. Would someone be so kind as to whack me over the head with a trout? 13. If you were an article of clothing, would you be permanent press or dry-clean only? 14. Is there any polite way to end a conversation with someone you don't know, who doesn't seem to want to let you go? Not nasty, like a stalker, but rather someone who comes across as sort of lonely, and who responds to each iteration of, Well, people sure are funny. Have a good evening... and my walking away with, And then there was this other person who .... . 15. On the topic of politeness, how would you have handled another situation I found myself in recently: I stopped at the grocery store to pick up munchies for the meeting I was attending, and since I had only three items, I went through the U-Scan (you scan your own items, bag 'em, and put money into the machine, whereupon it gives you change if necessary and prints out your receipt). I did have a cart, though, since the items were going to be bulky to carry by hand. Anyway, when I was done and ready to leave, I realized that the person at the U-Scan ahead of me had his/her cart turned sideways, blocking that exit; and the cashier was standing in the other exit talking to a customer. What I did was move far enough away from the scanner that someone else could get in behind me, but not close enough to crowd the conversation, and then wait quietly until the cashier moved. Dale says what I should have done was to move toward the exit and say, Excuse me to get the cashier to move. If the de_script_ion is confusing, here's an ASCII diagram (use a monospaced font): |
