Does anyone out there know of a vet who practices alternative medicine/therapies in the UK - Berkshire? My cat was involved in an accident at the beginning of February. She did not suffer any broken limbs but the muscle at the front of one of her hind legs was badly mangled and the wound was extremely contaminated. The wound was patched up at the time with a couple of drains in but unfortunately it turned gangrenous and an emergency operation was carried out to remove the dead flesh. She was then left with an open wound which required daily dressing changes for a number of weeks to ensure that the wound was clean before a closure operation was attempted. At the time it appeared to be successful. The wound reduced down from approximately 4cm in diameter to 4cm high by 1.5cm wide. She is not healing properly and when the wound eventually scabs over it still weeps and smells. At the last visit the vet removed the scab to check the wound and clean it out and the wound is now larger in diameter than it was 2 months ago. The edges of the wound seem to deteriorate and the vet reckons that something is lacking in her make up that enables the wound to heal. He wants to operate again later this week but it will be a last ditch attempt (in his opinion). I was wondering if alternative medical practitioner could suggest something else. I insisted on my vet testing for leukaemia (just in case) but this proved to be negative. My cat is a very happy, contented cat and apart from the times when she has had to wear a plastic collar (lampshade-type) does not seem to have been too badly affected by all that has happened in the past few months. If I thought for one moment that she was suffering now or that her quality of life would be affected, I would not consider putting her through any more. Any suggestions welcome.

Hi Lin, This may sound completely crazy, but when I was living in London in the 70's, there was a huge article in the Evening Standard about a man who had a wound that would not heal. If I recall correctly, this was from a surgical incision. The poor man had been in and out of hospital for months. In desperation, the doctor started putting slices of papaya over the incision after having read about it somewhere and the wound finally healed successfully

I recently heard an alternative physician tell a woman to use tea tree oil mixed with water down INSIDE an open wound which would not heal. This might be worth a try! Jacque

This might be : worth a try! ==================================== It will also put fresh new bacteria down inside the open wound where it can really get a foothold... what insane advice. Did this alt.quack even look in the wound to see why it's not healing?

Jacque Is tea tree oil considered an essential oil ? I have heard that essential oils should never be used on cats, who have much more sensitive systems than humans and can be harmed by them.
